Volleyball Goes 2-0 on Final Day of Baden Invite

St. Louis, Mo., October 12, 2019 –The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team collected two more victories at the 2019 Baden Invitational for a 3-0 record in the two-day event. The Bears defeated Lakeland, 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19) before closing out the tournament with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20) win over Monmouth. 

WashU improves to 16-6 on the season, while Lakeland moves to 11-11 on the year. Monmouth falls to 9-11.

The Bears took a commanding two set lead over Lakeland to start the match, aided by taking a fast lead in each set and winning both by a score of 25-18. In the third set, Lakeland put together a four-point swing that WashU was unable to answer. The Bears regrouped for the fourth set to swing at a .325 clip (15 K, 2 E, 40 TA). 

The Bears' offense was led by freshman Alaina Bohrer's career-high 20 kills. Junior Tricia Brown chipped in 12 kills and 16 digs, while sophomore Michaela Bach tallied 12 kills and 10 digs. Junior Kirby Knapp dished out 42 assists, as sophomore Samantha Kaiser tallied 10 assists.

Senior libero Zoe Baxter picked up 19 digs to surpass the 2,000 career digs plateau while at WashU. She is currently third all-time 2,030 career digs for the Bears and needs 14 digs to surpass No. 2 Colleen Winter's (2001-04) 2,044 career digs total. 

WashU def. Monmouth, 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20)

In the second match of the day, the Bears had control from the start as they were able to halt Fighting Scots' momentum. WashU swung at a .311 hitting percentage (43 K, 11 E, 103 TA) for the match, holding Monmouth to .130 (29 K, 16 E, 100 TA). 

Both of the Bears' setters, Knapp (19) and Kaiser (18) had double-figure assists. Bach led the Bears' offense with nine kills, while sophomore Abby Li, sophomore Caitlin Lorenz and Bohrer each chipped in six putaways. Bach also collected 10 digs while Baxter had 20 digs.
