Bill Tate is the Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences. He is an urbanist and social scientist interested in the application of epidemiological and geospatial models to explain the social determinants of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) attainment as well as health and developmental outcomes.

Before becoming Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and Vice Provost for Graduate Education in July 2014, he served as Chair of the Department of Education for 12 years.  ​

In 2012, Tate was appointed to the role of faculty representative to the Department of Athletics. Since that time, he has served as co-chair of the department’s Faculty-Staff Campaign, Leading Together: The Campaign For Washington University and as the faculty leader supporting the John M. Schael Director of Athletics Endowment Fund.

A member of the W Club, Tate served on the 2014 director of athletics search committee.
