St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 17, 2018 – Washington University in St. Louis had three student-athletes honored as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, as announced by the association on Monday.
Senior Brad Hodkinson of the No. 7-ranked men's cross country team, senior Ifeoma Ufondu of the No. 12-ranked volleyball team and junior Samantha Haubenstock of the No. 8-ranked women's golf team were this week's recipients from WashU.
Hodkinson led the Bears group of five runners that nearly recorded a perfect score at the Gil Dodds Invitational to help WashU place first overall out of 17 teams. Hodkinson outkicked a challenger in the final 100-meters of the race to place first during his inaugural run in a WashU uniform. He crossed the finish line in 25:21.7. The WashU men's cross country team recorded five of the top six times to place first with 19 points, led by Hodkinson's first place effort.
Ufondu was instrumental in the Bears' 2-1 weekend against Top-15 ranked American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) opposition. She averaged 3.82 kills per set over the weekend including a 20-kill performance in a win over No. 3-ranked and defending national champion Claremont-M-S and a 15-kill total during a victory against No. 15-ranked Cal Lutheran. Ufondu also tallied 14 digs and four blocks.
Haubenstock was the recipient of the UAA Golfer of the Week honor for the third consecutive week. She placed second overall at the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Classic and helped the Bears to its third straight event victory. Haubenstock ended the two-day tournament with a two-under par 142 (70, 72). The Red & Green team took first out of 16 teams to compete at the IWU Fall Classic. The group won the tournament by 16 strokes.
